ORAL HISTORY PROJECT

Alongside the Festival, we have been running a new oral history project collecting local's memories of Christchurch. These vivid memories of circus’ and escaped crocodiles, can-can dancers and the sea have helped build the programme for the festival. You’ll find stories of local myths and legends; hear songs of the sea and smuggling and see local folklore bought to life.

Over three months two ladies with digital recorders swooped the town of Christchurch and surrounding areas prizing memories, folklore and stories of old from local residents.  These Oral Histories are the golden nuggets which have influenced the programming of this festival and shaped the event from the start.  A CD will shortly be produced for you to listen to some of the recordings.  Riversmeet Arts and Heritage Festival is proud to donate a table top juke box to Red House Museum to help them make public access to their wonderful and vast collection of oral histories.
